  4. The eruption of Mount Pinatubo is cooling the planet off --
  5. temporarily

  8.     What harm man can do, nature can undo -- at least for a
  9. while. While the alumni of the Rio environment conference
  10. undertake complex schemes to combat global warming, scientists
  11. are finding that Mother Nature is quietly applying her own highly
  12. efficient methods.
  13.  
  14.     Since the Industrial Revolution, gases like carbon dioxide
  15. and methane have been wafting into the atmosphere, where they
  16. let the sun's rays in to warm the earth but keep excess heat
  17. from escaping back into space. Acting like the glass walls of
  18. a greenhouse, these gases have forced the planet's temperature
  19. up 0.8 degreesC (1.5 degreesF) over the past century or so. If
  20. the trend continues, temperatures could increase up to 5
  21. degreesC (9 degreesF) within 50 years, raising the sea level,
  22. distorting weather patterns and causing widespread environmental
  23. disruption.

  25.     But now the ecological disaster known as global warming
  26. has been put off five years at least, thanks to last year's
  27. eruption of Mount Pinatubo. When the Philippine volcano blew its
  28. top, it lofted some 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the
  29. upper atmosphere. Since then, the stuff has circled the globe,
  30. forming a layer of droplets floating in the stratosphere,
  31. between 19 and 23 km (12 and 14 miles) above the surface.
  32. Scientists predicted that the droplets would act as a worldwide
  33. sun shield. Satellite measurements are proving they were right:
  34. the planet has cooled off about 0.5 degreesC (1 degreesF) since
  35. Pinatubo, erasing nearly a century's worth of rising
  36. temperatures. Unfortunately, the fallout will disappear in three
  37. to five years. After that, global warming should resume, as
  38. menacingly as ever.
