  4.     DIED. Emerson Foote, 85, advertising leader and foe of
  5. cigarette ads; in Carmel, N.Y. As president of Foote, Cone &
  6. Belding in 1948, Foote dropped the $12 million American Tobacco
  7. account. In 1964 he quit as chairman of McCann-Erickson because
  8. he was opposed to handling cigarette clients. "I am always
  9. amused," he once said, "by the suggestion that advertising, a
  10. function that has been shown to increase consumption of
  11. virtually every other product, somehow miraculously fails to
  12. work for tobacco products."
