  3.     DIED. Josef Warkany, 90, pediatrician whose discoveries
  4. saved many young lives; in Clifton, Ohio. In 1940 he
  5. demonstrated that dietary deficiencies in mothers during
  6. pregnancy could cause birth defects. He also found that "pink
  7. disease," which killed or injured thousands of children until
  8. mid-century, was caused by mercury poisoning from teething
  9. powders and ointments.
