  4. The 45th annual Cannes film festival yields few surprises

  7.     This year's Cannes Film Festiva; started on a steamy note
  8. with the screening of an uncut Basic Instinct. But lacking the
  9. luster of glamour fests past, Hollywood on the Mediterranean
  10. soon turned into a Basic Bore. Jurors opted for predictable
  11. choices. The Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, went to
  12. the Ingmar Bergman-scripted Best Intentions, an elegiac love
  13. story produced for Swedish television. Other top awards went to
  14. director Robert Altman for his wry Hollywood basher The Player
  15. and to actor Tim Robbins for his deft portrayal of an unctuous
  16. studio head in that film.
