- The 45th annual Cannes film festival yields few surprises
-
-
- This year's Cannes Film Festiva; started on a steamy note
- with the screening of an uncut Basic Instinct. But lacking the
- luster of glamour fests past, Hollywood on the Mediterranean
- soon turned into a Basic Bore. Jurors opted for predictable
- choices. The Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, went to
- the Ingmar Bergman-scripted Best Intentions, an elegiac love
- story produced for Swedish television. Other top awards went to
- director Robert Altman for his wry Hollywood basher The Player
- and to actor Tim Robbins for his deft portrayal of an unctuous
- studio head in that film.
