  4. Thousands of Thai demonstrators back their leader's moral stand

  7.     Throughout the week, demonstrators poured into Bangkok's
  8. streets to protest. On one day more than 100,000, headed by
  9. opposition politicians and student leaders, gathered outside
  10. parliament to vent their anger at the appointment of General
  11. Suchinda Kraprayoon, the army's Chief of Staff, as Prime
  12. Minister.

  14.     Providing moral focus for the demonstrations was Chamlong
  15. Srimuang, a retired general and former governor of Bangkok who
  16. heads the opposition Palang Dharma party. A Buddhist, Chamlong
  17. announced that he would fast unto death to force Suchinda to
  18. resign. That vow sparked the antigovernment rallies. Suchinda
  19. fought back by accusing critics of promoting social unrest and
  20. declaring that he would resign only if his coalition suffered
  21. a parliamentary defeat. Suchinda's defiance was undermined,
  22. however, when his five-party coalition, clearly shaken by
  23. events, agreed to four constitutional amendments, including one
  24. that would require the Prime Minister to be an elected member
  25. of parliament. The opposition was not appeased, though Chamlong
  26. gave up his fast. At week's end King Bhumibol Adulyadej
  27. dispatched an envoy to the opposition camp to discuss ways to
  28. resolve the crisis.
