  7.     She is an 82-year-old grandmother from Kansas who turned
  8. to art late in life, but one look at ELIZABETH LAYTON'S
  9. drawings, and no one would be tempted to call her "Grandma
  10. Layton." Her self-portraits reflect such contemporary curses as
  11. homelessness, AIDS and racism. Layton is now the focus of a
  12. one-woman show at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
  13. of American Art. She credits her artwork with ending a 30-year
  14. struggle with depression. "If I don't get a chance to draw for
  15. a while, I get cranky and my husband says, `Go draw a picture.'"
