  7.     The shelling of the 7th century city of Dubrovnik by the
  8. Serbian navy during Yugoslavia's fighting last year has given
  9. rise to an unusual resolution to be voted upon at the global
  10. environmental conference in Rio next month. UNESCO has a list
  11. of 358 cultural and historical structures, ranging from the
  12. Acropolis, the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China to Vatican
  13. City, the Statue of Liberty and the Taj Mahal. UNESCO seeks to
  14. make war activities "which are intended, or may be expected, to
  15. cause long-term or severe damage to the properties" a war crime
  16. under the Geneva conventions. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
  17. and Argentine President Carlos Menem are among world leaders
  18. endorsing the initiative.
