  4.     The ethnic vendettas in Yugoslavia's splintering republics
  5. are sowing more death, this time in newly independent,
  6. Muslim-dominated Bosnia-Herzegovina. In the small town of
  7. Bijeljina, where Serbs and Muslims have lived side by side for
  8. centuries, independence has bloodied the community, as irregular
  9. militias fight to remain linked with neighboring Serbia. After
  10. a Muslim grenade exploded in a Serb-owned cafe last week,
  11. killing several customers, heavily armed Serbian commandos
  12. slaughtered civilian Muslims and took over the town, invading
  13. the local mosque and tearing down the Islamic flag. In Bosnia's
  14. current state of lawlessness, guerrillas enter at will from
  15. Serbia and annex border towns. Sniper bullets and artillery
  16. shells whistle through the streets, catching innocent bystanders
  17. in the crossfire. In the week since independence was recognized,
  18. more than 100 have died, and the Serbian-dominated Yugoslav army
  19. has refused to intervene. Because of the close intermingling of
  20. Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats, some fear the casualties
  21. could eventually dwarf the toll in Croatia, where ethnic
  22. violence has taken more than 10,000 lives since last summer.
