  4.     A few weeks ago, our publisher used this space to boast a
  5. little about the string of prizes we've collected over the past
  6. year. This week I'm borrowing the space to talk about an award
  7. that the publisher herself just won. Lisa Valk, the first woman
  8. ever to hold the title of publisher at TIME, has won the 1992
  9. Matrix Award in recognition of her "outstanding career
  10. achievement" in the magazine industry. The Matrix, administered
  11. by the New York chapter of Women in Communications, is the
  12. nearest thing to an Oscar for female magazine executives (past
  13. winners include Gloria Steinem, Grace Mirabella, Tina Brown and
  14. Helen Gurley Brown). Congratulations, Lisa!

  16.      Congratulations are also in order for TIME's photo
  17. department, which took more than its share of top magazine
  18. honors in the 49th annual Pictures of the Year Competition,
  19. sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association and
  20. the University of Missouri School of Journalism. In an
  21. extraordinary display of strength, TIME photographers snapped
  22. up 18 awards -- including Magazine Photographer of the Year to
  23. Christopher Morris for his coverage of civil war in Yugoslavia
  24. and a first-place prize in the Magazine Picture Story category
  25. to Anthony Suau for his photo essay on the persecution of the
  26. Kurds.

  28.      Next week the winners of the prestigious National Magazine
  29. Awards will be announced. It is not unusual for one or two TIME
  30. stories to be named as finalists. But this year we were
  31. nominated in three different categories -- three times as many
  32. as either of the other weekly newsmagazines. Barbara Ehrenreich
  33. was named for three of her TIME Essays. This follows nicely on
  34. last year's awards, when her colleague Lance Morrow was
  35. nominated in the same category. Senior writer Eugene Linden was
  36. singled out for his Sept. 23, 1991, cover story on the knowledge
  37. lost when ancient tribes are assimilated into the modern world.
  38. And associate editor Richard Behar was cited for his May 6,
  39. 1991, expose of the Church of Scientology. We're proud of them
  40. all.
