  4.     To Robert Luongo, a Kennedy-assassination buff from Florida,
  5. it seemed only natural to tell a policeman that he had Jack Ruby's
  6. pistol in his suitcase as he strolled near the U.S. Capitol. But
  7. when Luongo offered to show the historic weapon to House Speaker
  8. Tom Foley a few moments later, the cop arrested Luongo.

  10.     It turned out that Luongo is an associate of Anthony
  11. Pugliese, the previously unidentified collector who bought the
  12. gun at auction last December for $220,000. Luongo had taken the
  13. pistol to Washington to display it on a cable-TV show about
  14. Ruby's shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald.

  16.     Luongo may eventually stand trial for possession of an
  17. unlicensed handgun. The fate of Ruby's pistol also will be
  18. decided by the courts. Illegal or unlicensed weapons that are
  19. seized in Washington are usually melted down.
