  4.     First broadcast on four consecutive evenings in June 1990, the
  5. Metropolitan Opera's RING OF THE NIBELUNG was a high-toned TV
  6. spectacular that swept up viewers in the passion and power of
  7. Wagner's masterpiece. Now Deutsche Grammophon has released the
  8. complete home-video version, on both VHS and Laserdisc, as well
  9. as a new recording of Siegfried, the final installment of
  10. conductor James Levine's separate CD Ring. With largely the same
  11. star cast, including Hildegard Behrens as Brunnhilde and James
  12. Morris as Wotan (Reiner Goldberg sings the role of Siegfried on
  13. the CD, while Siegfried Jerusalem plays Wagner's hero on the
  14. video), the twin projects stand or fall on Levine's
  15. contribution, and the Met's longtime music director rises to the
  16. occasion. Levine views the Ring through a glass, darkly; the
  17. music broods and ruminates, heading inexorably (but sometimes
  18. oh so slowly!) toward its literally earth-shattering conclusion.
  19. The video is subtitled so that viewers can easily follow the
  20. often labyrinthine plot. Is it too much to ask that the Met use
  21. supertitles in real life?
