  7.     On the 19th of February, somebody gunned down a North
  8. Carolina bail bondsman named Eddie Dow -- but that's not why
  9. you're reading about him now. No, what makes the late Mr. Dow
  10. so intriguing is something the cops found in his stainless-steel
  11. briefcase: copies of checks adding up to $108,000 from one
  12. Michael ("Air") Jordan, gravity-defying basketballer. Dow's
  13. lawyer and brother say the checks paid off debts Jordan ran up
  14. in dice, poker and golf games. The N.B.A. superstar also gave
  15. a $57,000 check to golf-shop owner James ("Slim") Bouler, which
  16. a federal affidavit alleges was yet another gambling payoff.
  17. Jordan has broken no laws -- but his all-American image may be
  18. shattered for good.
