  4.     The pastoral letter read out in Catholic churches last month
  5. was direct. "In our society we are aware of a growing gap between
  6. rich and poor," it said. "Bribery and nepotism are growing." In
  7. Malawi, where President-for-Life Hastings Kamuzu Banda has ruled
  8. with an iron hand for 28 years, tolerating no dissent,
  9. congregations were rocked in their pews.

  11.     Banda hit back. The authors -- an Archbishop, five bishops
  12. and a monsignor -- were interrogated and reportedly placed
  13. under house arrest at the Archbishop's residence. Though free
  14. now, the clerics stay with friends at night for greater safety.
  15. Aid-donor countries are likely to ask for an explanation at a
  16. meeting next month.
