  8. themselves simply as Defense Department employees are often
  9. greeted by clerks and waitresses with Oh! You must work for the
  10. NSA! The National Security Agency, the puzzle palace of U.S.
  11. intelligence eavesdroppers, has always preferred to stay in the
  12. shadows. But lately the nsa has been forced to edge into the
  13. light. NSA recruiters showed up at a mathematics conference in
  14. Baltimore last month openly seeking specialists in areas like
  15. numbers theory for code-breaking jobs. Only U.S. citizens need
  16. apply.
