  6. throat cancer; in San Salvador. As founder of the Nationalist
  7. Republican Alliance, or ARENA, D'Aubuisson emerged as a hero to
  8. wealthy landowners resisting demands for land redistribution and
  9. political reforms. His large legion of foes, however, viewed his
  10. machismo and ruthlessness as a significant cause of his
  11. country's violence, which cost 75,000 lives.
