  4.     There's something fishy about the U.S. seafood industry,
  5. according to a new study that will appear in the February issue
  6. of Consumer Reports magazine. The study, carried out by
  7. investigative reporter Trudy Lieberman, found widespread
  8. contamination and mislabeling of seafood in retail fish shops
  9. and supermarkets in New York City and Chicago. Of the 113 random
  10. samples of fish purchased in both cities, 29% were spoiled and
  11. 44% were contaminated with fecal bacteria; 40% of the swordfish
  12. samples had an impermissible level of mercury.
  13.
  14.     The report gives ammunition to consumer advocates who
  15. argue for mandatory seafood inspection. At present, the handling
  16. of fish -- as opposed to poultry and meat -- is largely
  17. unregulated by the Federal Government. "The study is highly
  18. disturbing, because it further proves that contaminated seafood
  19. is readily making its way to consumers' plates," says Jodie
  20. Silverman of Public Voice for Food and Health Policy. But the
  21. U.S. Food and Drug Administration disputed Consumer Reports'
  22. findings, arguing that the sample is too small to be
  23. significant.
