  4.     Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder went home to Richmond last
  5. week to deliver the most surprising speech of his four-month
  6. presidential campaign. In his State of the Commonwealth
  7. address, he stunned legislators by announcing the end of his
  8. quest for the Democratic nomination. Wilder took a page from New
  9. York Governor Mario Cuomo's book, saying he had chosen to
  10. devote himself to "guiding Virginia through these difficult
  11. times . . . as my pledge and responsibilities demand."

  13.     As Virginians grew restive at the Governor's absences,
  14. WILDER FOR RESIDENT signs began appearing throughout the state.
  15. In the end, his presidential bid failed to ignite much interest
  16. among voters or contributors. Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton has
  17. lined up endorsements from Mississippi Congressman Mike Espy and
  18. other black Democrats that should help him dominate Dixie's
  19. primaries in March. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin might also pick up
  20. black support among civil rights activists who find his
  21. liberalism more congenial than Clinton's centrist approach.
