  4.     Whatever questions surround the assassination of John F.
  5. Kennedy, there has never been any doubt about who killed Lee
  6. Harvey Oswald. On Nov. 24, 1963, two days after he was arrested
  7. for Kennedy's killing, Oswald was shot to death in the basement
  8. of Dallas' municipal building by strip-joint operator Jack Ruby
  9. as a stunned nation watched on live television. Last week the
  10. gun used in the killing went on the auction block in New York
  11. City. The .38-cal. Colt Cobra revolver, which Ruby had bought
  12. for $62.50 at a Dallas gun shop, sold for $220,000.

  14.     The seller was Earl Ruby, who insists that his brother
  15. Jack was not part of any conspiracy and did not even intend to
  16. kill Oswald. "He just wanted to hurt him and make him suffer,"
  17. said Earl, who got possession of the gun in August after
  18. winning a court battle for control of Jack's estate. Earl will
  19. use the money to cover debts, including an $86,000 tax bill,
  20. that his brother left after he died in jail in 1967 while
  21. awaiting a retrial. Like so much else in the story of the
  22. Kennedy assassination, the identity of the purchaser remains a
  23. mystery. The bidder, Frank Roman, says he bought the pistol on
  24. behalf of an anonymous gun collector.
