  4. International forces move into southern Somalia's supply centers

  7.     Running two weeks ahead of schedule by their own reckoning,
  8. U.S.-led forces in Somalia began moving into the final four of
  9. the eight towns where distribution of food and supplies will be
  10. centered. From secure bases in those towns, military patrols and
  11. relief workers will fan out to feed the starving in the southern
  12. Somalian countryside. On the road to one of the centers,
  13. Bardera, a land mine caused the first American casualties: a
  14. civilian Army employee was killed, and three State Department
  15. security personnel were wounded.

  17.     U.S. commanders said their troops were moving faster than
  18. expected because there had been no opposition from Somali clan
  19. militias and armed gangs. Under an agreement with clan leaders,
  20. their heavy weapons -- trucks and jeeps mounted with cannon and
  21. machine guns -- are withdrawing from towns the multinational
  22. force controls.

  24.     George Bush, who will visit the troops in Somalia over the
  25. New Year holiday, still hopes to begin pulling U.S. soldiers
  26. out soon, but U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali is
  27. resisting. In a report to the Security Council last week, he
  28. said he was not convinced the force had created the necessary
  29. "secure environment" for aid operations.
