OCR: CHRONOLOGY APRIL 5, 1856 Bom Booker Taliaferro Washington, in Franklin County, Virginia, the son of a slave. 1865 Moves with family to Malden, West Virginia, to work in salt works and coal mines. 1872 Begins education at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, Virginia. 1878 Attends Wayland Seminary in Washington, D.C. 1879 Starts teaching at Hampton Institute. 1881 Moves to Tuskegee, Alabama, to the school that became the Tuskegee Institute, and is now Tuskegee University. SEPTEMBER 18, 1895 Achieves national fame with Atlanta speech on race problem. 1901 Publishes best-selling autobiography "Up From Slavery." NOVEMBER 14, 1915 Dies in Tuskegee.
