OCR: CHRONOLOGY SEPTEMBER 29, 1943 Bom in Popowo, near Lipno, Poland; son of a carpenter. 1966 Becomes an electrician at the Lenin Shipyard, Gdansk. 1976 Loses job as a consequence of his union activities. SEPTEMBER 22, 1980 Organizes strike at Gdansk shipyard. Becomes leader of Solidarity trade union. DECEMBER 17, 1981 Imprisoned after the imposition of martial law (released November 1982). DECEMBER 10, 1983 Awarded Nobel peace prize. DECEMBER 1988 On live television debate, appeals for government to recognize banned union. (Solidarity legalized in April 1989.) DECEMBER 9, 1990 Elected president of Poland in a landslide victory. NOVEMBER 19, 1995 Narrowly loses presidential election to ex-Communist, Aleksander Kwasniewski.
