OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Roosevelt, Theodore Theodore Roosevelt Besides being the 26th U.S. president, Teddy Roosevelt won fame as a writer, explorer, hunter, rancher, and soldier. While exploring in Brazil in 1914, Roosevelt discovered the River of Doubt and tales of his adventures in the wilderness inspired the naming of " Teddy Bears." Roosevelt was an assistant secretary of the navy in President William McKinley's first administration before resigning in 1898 to organize a volunteer cavalry troop - Roosevelt's Rough Riders - to fight in Cuba during America's war with Spain. On his return he was elected governor of New York and two years later, vice president. Taking over the presidency in 1901, following the assassination of President Mckinley, he applied his powers vigorously. His reforms led to the control Theodore Roosevelt, of monopolies and trusts, and he promoted U.S. adventurer and politician, conservation of forests and land reserves. 1858-1919 His interventionist foreign policy moved the U.S. onto the world stage, with Roosevelt securing the U.S. bid to build the Panama Canal and winning a Nobel prize for making peace between Japan and Russia.
