Roosevelt (FDR), the longest serving president in United States's history, led his country out of the Great Depression and through the darkest days of World War II. But it was his first inaugural speech - which included the phrase "we have nothing to fear but fear itself" - that set the tone for his presidency. FDR entered politics early and, despite being partially paralyzed by polio, went on to become governor of New York. Coming to the presidency at a time of economic and moral crisis, he was able to initiate substantial welfare and economic reforms. Through his weekly "fireside chats" on the radio, FDR was able to give Americans a sense of optimism in times of great hardship. Also, his wife Eleanor traveled tirelessly across the country, and later the globe, bringing a message of hope to all. Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. politician, 1882-1945 Although Roosevelt's New Deal policies gave much relief it was actually the outbreak of World War II that finally put an end to LLLL LLL unemployment in the U.S. But FDR died in office in April 1945, only four weeks before Allied victory in Europe.
