Rockefeller was an aggressive, thrifty, and gifted entrepreneur. He expanded his oil business in the period 1863-82 from a single refining operation in Cleveland to a monopoly investment, buying out competitors, and expanding control of the means of distribution. His business activities attracted the attention of the Ohio authorities, and in 1892 federal legislators responded to public disquiet about the monopoly power of corporate barons. But it took until 1911 for the federal authorities to secure a court judgment and dissolve Standard Oil. A devout Baptist, Rockefeller used his organizing gifts not only in business but in John D. Rockefeller, U.S. the service of philanthropy. He directed his industrialist and philanthropist, immense wealth mainly toward the causes of 1839-1937 education and medicine, donating more than $550 million. His son and grandson followed in his footsteps, making many bequests - including a gift of land for the United Nations headquarters in New York. CHRONOLOGY
