Together with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith, she formed the United Artists Corporation, proving herself to be a shrewd businesswoman as well as a talented film actress. As a child, Pickford toured with her mother's company, first appearing on stage at age five. Cast as a curly-haired, dewy-eyed ingenue into her 30s, she found it hard to shake off the "little girl" image that endeared her to the public - and after her Oscar-winning performance in "Coquette," her screen career rapidly faded. From then on, she devoted herself to United Artists and producing films. Mary Pickford, Throughout the 1920s and 1930s she U.S. film star, 1893-1979 presided over the Hollywood elite with her second husband, the swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks.
