OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Montessori, Maria Maria Montessori Anyone who remembers playing with sand, water, paint, or clay in nursery or kindergarten owes much to Maria Montessori, founder of the "Montessori Method," a teaching method that has had a lasting influence on the education of three- to six-year-olds. Montessori believed that young children learned best if their natural creative potential was emphasized. The role of the teacher was to provide an environment in which children could learn at their own pace and through a variety of sensory materials. She felt they would come to reading and writing when they were ready - often earlier than in other educational systems. Born into an aristocratic Italian family, Montessori became the first Italian woman to gain a medical Maria Montessori, Italian degree. Her work with children in psychiatric educationalist, 1870-1952 clinics and schools led to the establishment of her first nursery school in Rome. Through these experiences she formulated and eventually published her methods in "I1 metodo della pedagogia scientifica" - translated as "The Montessori Method." CHRONOLOGY
