The son of a Tembu tribal chief, he spent his early career as a leading political activist in the increasingly militant and prominent anti-apartheid party, the African National Congress. In 1964 he was found guilty of several charges of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment. His second wife, Winnie Mandela (they divorced in 1996), succeeded in keeping the attention of the world's press on him during 27 years of captivity, which he bore with dignity and without recrimination. His 70th birthday, in 1988, was marked by extensive international coverage and calls for his release, but it was not until 1990 that he was finally freed.
