OCR: CHRONOLOGY JANUARY 26, 1880 Bom in Little Rock, Arkansas, son of Lieutenant General Arthur MacArthur. JUNE 1918 Appointed brigadier general in U.S. Army. AUGUST 5, 1930 Appointed chief-of-staff of the U.S. Army. 1935 Retires from the army, and leaves for the Philippines. JULY 1941 Recalled to head U.S. (later Allied) forces in southwest Pacific. DECEMBER 15, 1944 One of the first four U.S. soldiers to be promoted to the new rank of general of the army (five-star general). SEPTEMBER 2, 1945 Receives surrender of Japan aboard the USS Missouri. JULY 8, 1950 Appointed commander of U.N. forces in Korea. APRIL 11, 1951 Relieved of command by President Truman. APRIL 5, 1964 Dies in Washington, D.C.
