DECEMBER 15, 1944 One of the first four U.S. soldiers to be promoted to the new rank of general of the army (five-star general). SEPTEMBER 2, 1945 Receives surrender of Japan aboard the USS Missouri. JULY 8, 1950 Appointed commander of U.N. forces in Korea. APRIL 11, 1951 Relieved of command by President Truman. APRIL 5, 1964 Dies in Washington, D.C.
