OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ MacArthur, Douglas Douglas MacArthur Recalled from semi-retirement to fight the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II, General MacArthur crowned an already brilliant career by masterminding the island- hopping campaign that led to the defeat of Japan. As commander in the Korean War he was less successful, and was relieved of his command following a public disagreement with President Harry S. Truman. MacArthur became a career soldier at age 19, and rapidly rose to the highest ranks of the U.S. Army. In 1935 he went to the Philippines on a mission to organize their army, but was recalled to command the Allied forces in the Far East during World War II. After the Japanese surrender he occupied Japan in the name of the Allied powers and helped to rebuild the war-ravaged country. Douglas MacArthur, His success in Japan led to talk of a U.S. soldier, 1880-1964 Republican presidential nomination in 1948, but in the event he was soundly defeated by Thomas E. Dewey. Following his recall from LLLL Korea, MacArthur attempted to enter politics LLL again, but was destined to spend the rest of his life as an army officer. CHRONOLOGY
