OCR: CHRONOLOGY APRIL 17, 1894 Bom in Kalinovka, in southwestern Russia, son of a miner. 1918 Joins the Bolsheviks, to fight Germany and the White Army. MARCH 5, 1935 Becomes First Secretary of Moscow Region Communist party. 1939 Joins the Politburo. SEPTEMBER 13, 1953 Becomes First Secretary of the Communist party. MARCH 27, 1958 Succeeds Bulganin as Soviet prime minister. SEPTEMBER 15, 1959 Tours the United States. OCTOBER 28, 1962 Backs down during Cuban missile crisis and agrees to President John F. Kennedy's conditions. OCTOBER 17, 1964 Resigns as leader of the Soviet Union and is replaced by Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary of the Communist party. SEPTEMBER 11, 1971 Dies of a heart attack in Moscow and is denied a state funeral.
