Kennedy's conditions. OCTOBER 17, 1964 Resigns as leader of the Soviet Union and is replaced by Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary of the Communist party. SEPTEMBER 11, 1971 Dies of a heart attack in Moscow and is denied a state funeral.
