OCR: CHRONOLOGY MAY 18, 1920 Bom Karol Jozef Wojtyla, in Wadowice, near Krakow, Poland, son of an army officer. 1942 As a member of the Polish underground student resistance movement he begins studying theology at night while working in a stone quarry by day. NOVEMBER 1, 1946 Ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. 1954 Becomes professor of ethics at Lublin University and professor of moral theology at Krakow. JULY 4, 1958 Appointed auxiliary bishop of Krakow. DECEMBER 30, 1963 Appointed archbishop of Krakow. JUNE 26, 1967 Becomes a cardinal. OCTOBER 16, 1978 Elected pope; adopts name John Paul II. MAY 13, 1981 Survives assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square, Rome.
