JULY 4, 1958 Appointed auxiliary bishop of Krakow. DECEMBER 30, 1963 Appointed archbishop of Krakow. JUNE 26, 1967 Becomes a cardinal. OCTOBER 16, 1978 Elected pope; adopts name John Paul II. MAY 13, 1981 Survives assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square, Rome.
