An Austrian from a rural background, he moved to Munich in 1913 and joined the German Workers' party, which he converted into the quasi-military Nazi party. Imprisoned for five years in 1924, (but serving only eight months), Hitler wrote "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle"), a book that asserted German racial superiority, blamed Bolshevism on the Jews, and advocated a dictatorship for Germany, legitimized by a plebiscite. Hitler's peacetime record (1933-39) as chancellor and then fuhrer was marked by rapid economic recovery and full-scale rearmament. In World War II, after speedy conquests of neighboring countries (1939-41), Adolf Hitler, German demagogue his military judgment deserted him and he and dictator, 1889-1945 attacked Russia instead of concentrating on invading Britain.
