OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Gandhi, Mohandas Mohandas Gandhi The spiritual leader of Indian independence, Mohandas Gandhi pioneered new and influential methods of civil disobedience - showing that it is not necessary to use force to achieve political ends. He studied law in England before moving to South Africa, where he found that he was treated as a member of an inferior race. This experience spurred his lifelong dedication to establishing racial equality for Indians. Gandhi renounced possessions to lead a simple life of poverty and passive resistance to discriminatory legislation. In 1915 he returned to India to protest for independence, becoming president of the nationalist Congress party (1925-34). When independence was achieved two decades later (1947), Gandhi, also known as Mahatma, Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi, was tirelessly working against the caste system Indian politician and spiritual leader, and trying to unite Hindu and Muslim factions 1869-1948 Although he was assassinated by a Hindu extremist a year later, Gandhi's message of "Satyagraha" (nonviolent protest) had already spread beyond India to inspire all those fighting injustice elsewhere in the world.
