OCR: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Fairbanks, Douglas Douglas Fairbanks With his swashbuckling good looks, Douglas Fairbanks was the silent cinema's favorite leading man - and much to his fans' delight, he fell in love with and married "America's sweetheart," Mary Pickford. The son of a Jewish lawyer and a Southern belle, after a stint at Harvard and various menial jobs Fairbanks made his acting debut on Broadway. By 1910 he was a star of the stage, and five years later was signed up by Hollywood, where he found himself working under the legendary director D. W. Griffith. In 1919 Charlie Chaplin, Fairbanks, Pickford, and Griffith formed United Artists in order to distribute their films and maintain creative control of their work. Fairbanks and Pickford married soon after, and their Hollywood Douglas Fairbanks, mansion, Pickfair, became a magnet for the rich, U.S. film star, 1883-1939 titled, and infamous. The 1920s saw Fairbanks at his peak, playing such athletic roles as Zorro, D'Artagnan, and Robin Hood. But as his hairline receded so did the work. Not long after his third marriage - to English chorus girl Sylvia Hawkes - he died. CHRONOLOGY
