A career soldier and military strategist, he first became known outside France when he took control of the Free French resistance forces after the collapse of France in June 1940. His famous broadcasts from London urged the French to continue their struggle against Adolf Hitler. He returned to a liberated Paris in August 1944 as the leader of the provisional government. De Gaulle was recalled to office in 1958 to deal with civil disorder following French colonists' seizure of power in Algeria. He devised a new constitution to strengthen presidential powers, conceded Algerian independence, and subsequently won two presidential elections (1958 and 1965). His party won the election that followed the student-led revolts of May 1968.
