JULY 1929 Meets lifetime partner and muse, Gala Eluard. OCTOBER 1, 1929 Film "Un chien andalou," made by Dali and Luis Bunuel, opens in Paris. NOVEMBER 20, 1929 First major one-man exhibition of his work opens, presented by Surrealist writer Andre Breton. AUGUST 1940 Leaves Paris and moves to New York. APRIL 1955 Returns to Spain, to live in Port Lligat. JUNE 10, 1982 Gala dies, and Dali lives in seclusion thereafter. JANUARY 23, 1989 Dies in a clinic in Barcelona.
