His inspired leadership and brilliant oratory rallied Britain in the darkest days of the war against Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, and played a large part in the ultimate victory. In addition to being a politician, he was also a writer on political and historical subjects as well as a painter. Born into the aristocratic Marlborough family, Churchill trained as a soldier, saw action in India and the Sudan, and served as a war correspondent in South Africa. First elected to Parliament as a Conservative, Churchill changed political parties twice. He served in Herbert Asquith's Liberal government, then returned to the Conservative party in the 1920s. The 1930s Winston Churchill, British saw him isolated, urging rearmament to combat statesman and wartime leader, the German military threat. Chosen as prime 1874-1965 minister in 1940, Churchill forged the alliance with the U.S. and U.S. S.R. that made victory LLLL LLLL possible. Defeated in the 1945 election, he became prime minister again in 1951. On his death he was given a state funeral. CHRONOLOGY
