His catchphrase "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" exemplified both his style in the ring and his articulate showmanship. Fighting under his original name, Cassius Clay, he won the light-heavyweight Olympic gold medal in 1960 and then turned professional. He won his first world heavyweight title against Sonny Liston in 1964, and successfully defended it nine times before having the title stripped from him in 1967 for refusing to join the U.S. armed forces. He returned to boxing in 1970 and regained the world title in 1974, defeating George Foreman. Grace, speed, and strength won Ali Muhammad Ali, heavyweight boxing titles, and his personality U.S. heavyweight boxer, and wit won him worldwide affection. In an 1942 - outstanding 25 world title fights, he lost only three times. In 1981 Ali retired from the ring after an unsuccessful comeback, and three years later was diagnosed as suffering from Parkinson's disease. CHRONOLOGY
