Duplicate Stitch
Duplicate Stitch may be worked on any sweater knit in stockinette, a
stitch which forms rows of stitches shaped like "V's." The number of
stitches and rows per inch, commonly referred to as gauge, will vary
from sweater to sweater. A medium gauge, approximately 7-9 stitches per
inch and 9-11 rows per inch, is best for working Duplicate Stitch.
1. Each colored square on the chart represents one Duplicate
Stitch. We used 6 strands of embroidery floss for Duplicate Stitch;
however, the number you use will depend on the size of the knit stitches
in your sweater. To determine the number of strands to use for proper
coverage, try a few stitches on your sweater. The Duplicate Stitch
should cover the knit stitches and appear to have been knit into the
sweater. For even coverage, separate the strands of floss and realign
them before threading tapestry needle. Begin and end stitching by
running under several stitches on wrong side of sweater; never tie
knots. Always insert needle between strands of yarn. Keep stitching
tension consistent with tension of knit fabric.
2. For Duplicate Stitch, bring threaded needle up at base of V.
Insert needle at top right corner of V and bring needle out at top left
corner of V; draw floss through. To complete Duplicate Stitch, insert
needle at base of V.
