Re: Angel directions (1 of 3)
Several people asked me for directions for the angel projects that I did
for my demo at work. I'm posting 'em here. Be aware that they're
copyrighted, folks! Permission is hereby granted, (neccessary or not!) to
make 'em, sell 'em, copy the directions (provided that the name stays
attached!) and do everything but publish 'em. (If you wanna do that, e-mail
and we'll talk...)

Ribbon angels
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Time needed: After the first one, <grin!> about 10 minutes and drying
time of 10 minutes, twice.
Materials needed:
Cut edge, woven, Christmas ribbon (directions for 1 1/4 inch)
Wire core Christmas garland (choose a small motif, if
possible, e.g.stars) tinsel stems or small pearls fused to
thread. You can also make your own, threading lace, beads,
pearls, etc. onto beading wire.
Small doll head bead (approx.1/2inch)
asst. tiny trims, small beads, sequins, etc.
Supplies and tools needed:
Rotary cutter or scissors (rotary is easier & faster!)
Wire cutter (or tough scissors that you don't mind trashing!)
pencil or small dowel
ruler
Fabri-Tac(TM) or other fast-drying glue (white glue can be
used, but I do not recommend it. Due to the small size,
glue guns cause scorched fingers.)
Jewel-it(TM), Gem-tac(TM) or other similar glue
Directions:
1.Cut three trapezoids of ribbon (directions are given for 1 1/4 inch wide
ribbon) 1/2 inch top by 2 7/8 inch bottom, 45 degree angles. (This is
easiest with a rotary cutter and cutting board with bias lines marked!)
2.Take one of the trapezoids and lay it onto the edge of the rest of
the ribbon, matching pattern, overlap by 1/8 inch and glue in place with
Fabri-Tac.
3.Cut the edges of the large piece to make a trapezoid 1/2 inch top by
approx. 6 1/4 inch bottom, following line of sides to bottom.
4.Form 2 small and 1 large trapezoid into closed-top cones, glueing in
place with Fabri-Tac. (If you wrap one small cone one way and the
other the opposite way, the seams are easier to hide.)
5.Cut bottom of large trapezoid flat so that it will stand. Trim bottom of
small cones to points at seam line.
6.Glue one small cone on either side of the large one, matching top
points. The seam line of the large cone goes to the back. The seam lines
of the small cones glue to the body. (Try to get the "wrap" toward the
back.)
7.Glue head bead to top of cones, filling with glue and forcing down onto
point. (Note: If you jam the bead down with the cones sitting on a hard
surface, they will crumple. It works better to pick the assembly up in
one hand and support the inside of the large cone with a finger.) Allow
to dry.
8.Cut 15-20 strands of floss, 1 1/2 inches to 6 inches long, depending on
the hairstyle you wish to use. Using one strand tie the bundle securely
and TIGHTLY in the middle. Trim ends even.
9.Put glue all over the part of the head bead that hair normally covers.
Place knot into hole in top of bead and spread hair out to cover head.
Form hairstyle; for instance, braid hair and coil it, or leave loose, or
make a bun, etc.
10.Cut 1 1/4 inch piece of garland and wrap tightly around pencil or
dowel. Glue to top of head for halo.
11.Cut 7 inch piece of garland and form into heart shape. Glue to angel at
back of head and middle back. Allow to dry.
12.If you wish, the angel can be decorated with glitter, sequins, tiny
trims, beads, etc.
Notes:
These angels work best with fancy patterned ribbon, simple
garland and no other trims.
To make your angels "hangable" take a small sharp needle,
threaded with sewing thread, run it under the hair, through the "shoulders" and
out the back under the hair. Knot the thread on the OUTSIDE of the wings.
Alternatively, (especially if the angel tips upside down!) you can run a thread
through the halo, but you may have to reglue the halo, occasionally!)
These directions can also be used to make "wallpaper angels"
following sizes and patterns.
You can also make a flat coil of wide tinsel garland and glue
this starburst to the back of the angel to make halo and wings.
These angels make wonderful package decorations, look good in
a grouping on a table and make fun guest gifts.
Have fun!
