sure i'll post the recipe for penny yarn:
PENNY YARN - color unpredictable but from grey to blue grey to blue green to
grey green
1/2 cup pennies 1 cup ammonia 1 cup water, let these three things soak one
hour
Add enough water to cover your yarn, put in damp yarn, and let yarn, ammonia
and pennies soak 10 days to 2 weeks.

Char,
I just read an article in Spin-Off about dyeing with pennies. Before
disposing of the dye bath, beat in a raw egg. The sulfer in the yolk reacts
with the active ions in the dye bath, rendering them inert and safe. If it
turns black, you did good. They also note, that, if on city sewer, there's
not a problem if you don't do this, just flush it down the drain with lots of
water - the system can handle it (I know you are on city sewer). If on septic
or other, do this, as the "free cuprous ions are chemically active and harmful
to wild life." Did you get anything resembling a grey blue out of yours?
Throw in some more pennies, while you're at changing the ph and see what
happens.

raw egg... first i've heard of that one. I was thinking about doing 1 cup
pennies to 1 cup ammonia, and three different Ph's... I have to dig up some
litmus paper first though (and some more pennies)... pennies no problem...

Gee. I had to come hunt for your message - I don't usually hang out in this
section. Is dyeing now surface design?
Here's some thoughts: the ammonia is a base so if you use a lot it will
make a rather basic solution. I don't know how you'd get it acidic again with
a weak acid like vinegar... maybe you could try using vinegar instead of
ammonia for the acidic sol'n? They say not to cook spaghetti sauce in an
aluminum pan because the acidity of the sauce will pull Al ions into the
sauce, so maybe vinegar will pull the Cu off the penny??? Who knows - keep me
posted on your findings.
I tried to "borrow" some pH paper for you today but unfortunately we're all
out...

Char, for a more accurate reading of the pH, pick up an inexpensive water test
kit from an aquarium store. When I kept fish tanks, the litmus paper was
really rather unreliable at best, and never gave a fine definition of what the
pH is. If you really want to know what you are doing, get two kits, one for
low pH and one for high. I think all my reagents are too old to be accurate,
but I may pick up some more just to see what I'm doing.

be sure you get pennys that are old enough to have enough copper to use to
dye. the new ones are mostly zinc and not enough copper in them to use them
for dyeing.

About 3 years ago Spin-Off did a thing on penny-dye. The resulting color
seemed to depend on the origin of the water and/or the brand of ammonia used.
They promised a follow-up article but it never happened. I get a dull grey
green using Grand Union ammonia and NYC H2O. Haven't tried the Catskill
version yet.

That's the Spin Off article I was referring to... I have it around here
somehwere... brand of ammonia made a difference... thats interesting. think
i'll keep on testing

pH makes a big difference in the way most dyes behave. I wouldn't be surprised
if it has an effect here. Just be careful if you use any ammonia - it plus
bleach forms a toxic gas.
