  1. Period Fabrics For Costumes

  3. Ann Feeney (roslibrefrc@crf.cuis.edu) is maintaining a list of sources
  4. for fabrics appropriate for historical costuming. Write to Ann for the
  5. most current copy of her list.

  7. A slightly condensed version of Ann's list is included below:

  9. A number of people recommended various fabric chains. In particular
  10. some people mentioned Hancocks (particularly in Portland, Oregon and
  11. Vancouver, Washington). Others mentioned their favorite bargain stores
  12. that also sell many natural fabrics.
  13.  
  14. The Pendleton Woollen Mills has an outlet in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
  15. They carry wools and occasionally have satin, velvet, and lots of modern
  16. blouse and dress fabric. The by-the-pound table is mill ends or flawed
  17. materials.

  19. Pendleton Woolen Mills also has an outlet in Portland, Oregon as well as
  20. a factory outlet in Pendleton, Oregon itself.

  46. Roaring River Mills, in Altoona, PA, has a big sale in January and July.
  47. The January sale runs all month; the July sale may start on the 4th.
  48. Everything in the store is half off; go early in the month. Good prices
  49. on various wools, linen, silk, various brocades, cotton, velvet, trim,
  50. notions, etc. The store is close to Rt. 22.

  52. Horowitz Brothers: New Haven, CT, two blocks from the Coliseum. A
  53. moderate to good remnants section that often has resonably priced
  54. tapestry fabrics. Good selection of wools (sales in the spring),
  55. excellent trim section, moderate but reasonably priced velvets and a
  56. good supply of cottons and linens of various weights.

  58. New Haven Leather: Half a block closer to the Coliseum than Horowitz
  59. Brothers. Three or four stories of leather piles in a ramshackle old
  60. building that you will miss if you are not looking for it. A recessed
  61. door and two windows and a faded sign mark the front. THIS is the shoe
  62. source! Prepunched soles, heels, threads, dyes and just about
  63. everything else you would need for shoes is hidden in here. Leathers
  64. are reasonably priced and there is a fantastic selection if they will
  65. let you upstairs. Armor grade leather was available last I looked.
  66. They keep banker's hours.

  68. Affordable Fabrics: CT, Rt 99 just south of the intersection with Rt 91,
  69. in or near Enfield. $1.99 a yard for everything in the place. Open 7
  70. days a week. Cottons in broadcloth and heavier weights, selection varies
  71. with the season. Wools and blends especially in the spring. Including
  72. pure linen, pure wool, and pure silk!

  74. Millie Mills: CT, Rt 99 just south of the intersection with Rt 91.
  75. Diagonally across the street from Affordable Fabrics. Prices are
  76. slightly higher, but the selection is a little better for odd fabrics.

  78. Zimmans: Lynn MA. An excellent supply of tapestry fabrics, at
  79. near-wholesale prices. They have consistently been 20 to 30% lower than
  80. the other local stores. Downstairs there is a 4'x12'x1.5' cabinet full
  81. of buckles and other items for use on belts. Solid copper and brass,
  82. with only a few items that have been plated. These are the leftovers
  83. from the 70s and are tarnished, but polish up very well. Perfect for
  84. costume or regular usage. Price varies by the clerk 2 for $.25 to 1 for
  85. $.50 with the occasional discount for bulk purchases.

  87. Fabrics and Findings: Rochester, NY, two locations; the downtown
  88. location is rumored to have a larger selection. Huge warehouse of many
  89. mill end and/or flawed materials at discount prices. Very large
  90. collection of upholstry fabrics upstairs at heavily discounted prices.

  92. Patchworks: 126 E. Main, Bozeman, Montana 59715, (406) 587-2112 carries
  93. reproduction vintage cotton fabrics.  I quote from their Fall, 1993,
  94. catalog: "There are currently over 600 bolts in our reproduction
  95. department which span all three time periods: Pre-1890's,
  96. Turn-of-the-Century, and the Depression Era.  These fabrics are ideally
  97. suited for antique quilt repairs, reproduction quilt making, or vintage
  98. clothing."
