  2. TECHNIQUE: Using Beads

  6. The bead method: use beads that fit on your crochet hook. The beads are put on
  7. picots that are used to connect rings or chains. Put a bead on the hook, stick
  8. it through the picot you want to connect to, slip the bead over the picot and
  9. then connect your ring/chain as usual. The picots you slip beads over have to
  10. be longer than usual. I hope you understand what I mean.

  13. The best way is to put bead on hook; pull picot through bead (now you are
  14. hooked through the picot but NOT the bead; pull the other thread through as if
  15. you were making an ordinary join.  If you have small beads you _could_ pull
  16. the picot through the beads with a needle threader!

  18. Another way is to string all the beads on the shuttle thread in advance.  then
  19. you just slide one up when needed, and work around it.  Easy to do, hard to
  20. describe.  What you get is a bead _inside_ a picot, as if it were a knot on
  21. the holding cord.  I like this look the best.

  23. You can also string them on the _ball_ thread.  Then you get the bead on the
  24. _tip_ of the picot.

  26. And you _can_ use all three techniques in the same piece (as long as you've
  27. strung enough on the ball & shuttle threads), if you get really crazy!

  30. Now, waitasec, how does stringing the bead on the ball thread make it end up
  31. on the tip of the picot?  I mean, if the picot's on the chain, couldn't it end
  32. up *in* the picot? And if the picot's on the ring, then how does the bead end
  33. up anywhere on the picot from the ball thread?

  35. PS _THINK_ about it: the ball thread forms the stitches when you're chaining.
  36. The shuttle thread is the holding thread (the inside thread, if you will).  So
  37. if the beads are on the ball thread, when you "flip" the knot, bingo, they're
  38. on a picot.  If they're on the _shuttle_ thread, they'll end up _inside_ the
  39. picot.

  41. OTH -- and this can blow your mind to consider -- if the beads are already ON
  42. the shuttle thread, and you're making RINGS, the beads will be _inside_ the
  43. picot, because the knot, when flipped, forms from the part of the thread over
  44. your left hand, rather than the thread straight off the shuttle.   Try it!
  45. (sooner than you'd planned!)  You'll see what I mean.

  48. can understand.  I thought you were saying that beads on the ball thread can
  49. go on picots on the ring, and I couldn't figure out *how* you would do that.
  50. But on the chain, yes, I understand how that works.
