  9.   STUFFED QUILTED XMAS TREE:

  11.   Materials: Fabrics:
  12.   1 yard      Green med wt.
  13.   1/2 yard    Complementing or Contrasting fabric
  14.   1/2 yard    Thin layer of batting
  15.   Thread (complementing or contrasting)
  16.   Styrofoam cone,  Pins, glue
  17.  
  18.   Directions:
  19.   Lay green fabric, wrong side down, and place the "pointy" end of
  20.   the cone in one corner, wrapping the cone by rolling it until
  21.   the fabric just overlaps.  Pin overlap and cut the wrapped cone
  22.   free.

  24.   Lay the 2nd color fabric face up and place the batting and then
  25.   the green fabric on it face down.  Cut a 3 1/4 inch cirle, a 4
  26.   1/4, a 5 1/4, etc...  How many you need depend on the height of
  27.   your cone and how "fluffy" you want your tree.  With a 12" cone,
  28.   try making 4 layers first.  An 18" cone will probably require
  29.   7.  But you can make another 1 or 2 after "trying 'em on" later.

  31.   Cut the circles in quarters, pie-wise (obviously! <g>)  Now, take
  32.   the batting from the smaller circle's quarters and put 'em
  33.   between the larger ones, making whole new batting quarters to fit
  34.   in the tiniest quarters.  Sew the quarters almost shut, turn,
  35.   finish by hand and quilt a simple wave, curlicue, "M" or border
  36.   pattern onto each with either matching or contrasting thread
  37.   (metallic would also be nice, and so would a corded white
  38.   border--  I just thought of that.  Mine are plain green borders
  39.   on red and green plaid with a forest green terry backing.)

  41.   Starting at the bottom, pin the quarters onto the tree.  The
  42.   bottom ones won't necessarily fit all the way around, so let them
  43.   "fall" or droop onto the table surface and stagger the next layer
  44.   above it, continuing on pinning and rearranging until you have
  45.   the desired pattern.  You can either have the green side showing
  46.   or mix and match with the 2nd color, or whatever you want!  The
  47.   top layer won't be pinnable (sp?), so get out the trusty needle
  48.   and thread and sew the top one into a "cap"!  You may find it's
  49.   easier if you only use 3 of the quarters...

  51.   When all done, you can glue the quarters into place, or just
  52.   leave the pins in for easy washing. <g>  And, leave it to me,
  53.   mine are pinned and have had to be washed once already, but the
  54.   cats haven't been able to take the pins out... <g>
