2 Black seed beads (eyes, opt) 1 Red ribbon
this is another variation of a snowbird/dove ornament. this one is a LOT
easier than the previous one posted and the one i gave away for xmas gifts
this year.
size-4 1/2" x 1" wide, for average crocheters with some experience.
stitches used: picot and shell stitches are in caps in pattern but are
explained here also:
picot-ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook
shell-2hdc, ch1 2hdc
head:starting at the center top of the head with a single strand of thread
(i also leave a long 12" tail to make the beak later)use #7 hook, ch2
rnd 1: work 6sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to first sc
rnd 2:2sc in each sc around-12 sc. join w/slst to first sc.
rnd 3:*sc in each of next 2sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * 3 more times-16
sc. join w/slst.
rnd 4-9:sc in each sc around. join
rnd 10:sc in BACK lp of each sc-ridge formed for neck
rnd 11:*sc in each of 3 sc, 2sc in next sc, rep from * 3 more times-20 sc.
join. stuff head.
body:rnd 12:ch3 (counts as 1dc) dc in same place as slst, dc in each of
next 11sc, *2 dc in next sc, dc in each of next 3 sc, rep from * once-23
dc. join w/slst to top of beg che.
rnd 13: ch3, dc in same place as slst, dc in each of next 15dc, 2dc in

rnd 14-15:ch3, dc in each dc around. join, stuff body.

once-24 dc. join.
NOTE:continue to stuff body as you work remainder of rnds.

note:tail is worked with 2 strands of thread held tog. throughuot.
flatten lower body in half so there is a front section and a back section.
row 1:working thru both thicknesses(to close opening) with #3 hook, 1 dc
in each dc across-6dc. ch3, turn
row 2:work 1dc, ch1, 2dc between first 2dc, ch1 (dc between next 2 dc,
ch1) 3 times, 2dc, ch1, 2dc between last 2dc. ch1, turn
row 3:slst in each st to first ch1 sp, slst in ch1 sp, in same ch1 sp work
ch3, 1dc, ch1, 2dc; ch1 (dc in next ch1 sp, ch1) 4 times, 2dc, ch1, 2dc in
last ch1 sp. ch1 turn
NOTE: to make 1 hdc-yo hook, draw up a lp in next sp or st, yo and thru 3
lps.
row 4: slst in each st to first ch1 sp, slst in ch1 sp, in same ch 1 sp
work ch2, 2hdc, CH2, SLST IN 2ND CH FROM HOOK-PICOT MADE, and 2 hdc, *in
next ch1 sp work 3 hdc, picot st, 2hdc, rep from * across. fasten off.
wings: make 2: starting at top of wing w/2 strands of thread and #3 hook,
ch16.
row 1:sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch acorss-16 sc. ch3 turn
row 2:*skip 1sc, 1 hdc in next sc, ch1, rep from * 3 more times, sk1 sc, 1
hdc in each of next 4 sc, 2sc in next sc, slst in last sc. ch1 turn
row 3:slst in first slst and sc, sc in next sc, 1 hdc in each of next 4
hdc, ch1, sk 1 hdc, in next ch1 sp work 2 HDC, CH1, 2HDC-SHELL MADE; ch1,
(sk next ch1 sp, 1 hdc in next hdc, ch1) 2 times. 1 hdc in 2nd ch of ch3
turning ch. ch 3 turn
row 4:skip first hdc (1 hdc in next hdc, ch1) 2 times. in next ch1 sp of
shell work 1 shell. do NOT work rem sts. ch1 turn
row 5:slst in each st of shell and first ch1 sp, ch2, in next ch1 sp work
3 hdc, ending w/a slst in next hdc and in top of ch3 turning ch. fasten
off
to assemble:sew flat narrow edge of wing to rnd 13 of body. the two shells
should be at the bottom part of the dove.
beak: with a single strand of thread, and #7 hook, attach thread to rnd 4
of head (i use the long thread from the starting chain and weave it into
rnd 4 of the head) ch3. join w/slst to first ch. fasten off. work ends in
eyes: sew on 2 black beads for eyes (optional)
to shape and stiffen:place on wax paper. with slightly diluted glue, paint
body, wings and tail. smoothing and shaping as they dry. ( i usually
stiffen the body after stuffing and BEFORE doing the tail. i also glue the
wings on after and glue the tail so it's facing more upward than lying
flat). i also tie a small piece of red ribbon around the ridge near the
neck and tie into a bow. while drying after brushing the glue on i hang it
from a kitchen cabinet around the handle with a hanger placed 3/4 of the
way from the head part.

bird head: with #6 hook (#2 hook) ch4, slst in first ch to form ring.
rnd 1: 8sc in ring
rnd 2-4 (5): *sc in next sc, 2sc in next st)next sc, rep from * around
until there are 24 (30) sc. work even until piece is
is 1 1/4" (1 1/2") from start, *sc in next sc, work next 2sc
tog, rep from * around for 3 rnds, stuffing head before opening is too
small. pull last sts tog to close opening.
body: work as for head through rnd 1
rnd 2:(sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc) 4 times
rnd 3:sc in each sc around-12 sc
rnd 4:(sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc) 6 times
rnd 5:(sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc) 9 times-27 sc.
for large bird only:cont to inc in every other sc until there are 51sc.
work even on 27 (51) sc until piece is 2 1/4" (4") from start.
dec rnd: (sc in next sc, work next 2 sts tog) 6 (8) times, finish rnd.
work 1 rnd even. rep dec rnd. end off
stuff body, sew back opening w/decs spaced evenly around bottom.
small wing: with #6 hook, ch15
row 1:dc in 5th ch from hook, (ch1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) 5 times. ch3,
turn.
row 2:dc in next dc, ch1, dc in next dc, 5dc in next sp, drop lp off hook,
insert hook in first dc of 5dc, pull dropped lp thru (popcorn made), dc in
next dc, (ch1, dc in next dc) twice. do not work over last sp. turn.
row 3:slst to next dc, ch3, dc in next dc, (ch1, dc in next dc) 3 times.
work 1 rnd sc all around, keeping wing flat. work 2nd wing the same but in
working popcorn, insert hook from back to front in first dc, pull dropped
lp thru (popcorn forms on reverse side).
large wing:with #2 hook ch9 loosely.
row 1:dc in 5th ch from hook, (V st) ch1, sk 1 ch, 3dc, ch1, 3dc in next
ch(shell), ch1, sk 1 ch, dc ch1, dc in last ch (V st). ch4, turn.
row 2 and 3:dc, ch1, dc in fist ch 1sp (V st), ch1, shell of 3dc, ch1, 3dc

tail: work as for crest
foot (make 2): work as for crest
finishing: starch beak, crest, tail, feet and wings. fold beak in half.
sew to front of head. sew crest to top of head. sew tail to top back
point. sew feet to bottom of bird to extend out each side. sew front
points of wings to side of bird. insert pins or sew on beads for eyes.
