--------------------------------
This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday
morning, January 12, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight
Wednesday night, January 18, 1995, Pacific Standard Time. We
recorded 239 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 7-day period
covered.
It was a relatively quiet week, with the seismicity
running about twice what it was before the Landers and Northridge
sequences. There was a M3.1 Landers aftershock last Thursday
afternoon north of Yucca Valley, which was felt, followed later in
the afternoon by a M2.9 in the Carpinteria area, which was also felt.
Then, on Sunday afternoon, there was another Landers aftershock,
M3.2, near Barstow. On Sunday evening, there was a M3.1 offshore
of the Pt. Arguello area. Early next morning, there was a M3.0
near San Fernando, which the local residents apparently managed to
sleep though. The Barstow M3.2 was the largest.
The largest quake (in our area, that is!) on the first
anniversary of the Northridge quake was M2.5, and it was a Landers
aftershock. For those who are curious, there were 11,101 Northridge
events recorded during the first year of the sequence.
The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or
larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local
times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific
Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed.

Figure 1. A map of southern California showing the earthquakes
recorded during the past week by the Caltech/USGS Seismic
Network. Major faults are marked, as well as the metropolitan
areas of Los Angeles (L.A.), Palm Springs (P.S.), San Diego
(S.D.), and Santa Barbara (S.B.). The circles denote the
earthquakes, the size of the circle indicating the magnitude.
