During the War of 1812, the British encouraged black slaves to flee their masters by promising them safety and freedom. For a time, the British blockaded Chesapeake Bay and many blacks took this opportunity to escape. They were given refuge on British warships and were taken first to Bermuda. Later, a large number were sent to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick where eventually they were given land.
