Weddings were, and still are, important occasions in black communities and everyone involved was expected to look their best. The gowns of the ladies in this photograph are not that different from some you might see today, but the top hats, the cane and the high collars of the men are more typical of costumes of the period. It was customary among blacks at the time to keep the bride's face covered by a veil before the wedding ceremony.
