  11. Amiga Mosaic is a networked information discovery, retrieval, and
  12. collaboration tool originally developed at the National Center for
  13. Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana
  14. and then ported to the Amiga by Michael Fischer, Michael Witbrock, Michael
  15. Meyer, and Steve Dunham.

  17. Mosaic provides a hypertext interface to the global Internet.  Hypertext
  18. is text which contains highlighted links, called hyperlinks or anchors,
  19. to other texts.  Each highlighted phrase (in color or underlined) is a
  20. hyperlink to another document or information resource somewhere on the
  21. Net.  A single click with the left mouse button on any highlighted
  22. phrase will follow the link, and Mosaic will retrieve the document
  23. associated with the selected hyperlink and display it.

  25. The Mosaic client communicates with HTTP servers.  HTTP is the HyperText
  26. Transfer Protocol of the WWW (World Wide Web).  Mosaic can also communicate
  27. with more traditional Internet protocols such as FTP, Gopher, WAIS, NNTP,
  28. etc.

  30. The hypertext documents viewed with Mosaic are written in HTML (HyperText
  31. Markup Language), which is a subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup
  32. Language).  Among the many formatting features, HTML allows Mosaic to
  33. display inlined images.  (In fact, an inlined images can serve as a
  34. hyperlink just like a word or phrase can).

  36. Mosaic also features unlimited multimedia capabilities.  File types
  37. that Mosaic cannot handle internally, such as mpeg movies, sound
  38. files, Postscript documents, and JPEG images, are automatically sent
  39. to external viewers (or players).
