  2.  Version 5.5 of bBaseII incorporates a new "Note" feature that increases
  3.  the maximum total storage capacity of each record, from 414 bytes
  4.  (46 characters in each of a maximum of 9 fields), to 1566 bytes (414 in
  5.  the fields, plus 1152 in each "Note").  This is a 378% increase.

  7.  I found that, personally, I was storing miscellaneous information in the
  8.  fields, as there was no where else to put it.  This was fouling up my
  9.  sort and search results.  Therefore, I adapted the note area for this
  10.  information, which would not be sorted or searched.

  12.  Unfortunately, this has once again created an incompatibility between
  13.  the databases that were used in Versions 3 through 5.4, and the V5.5
  14.  of bBaseII.  This is NOT a problem, however.

  16.  Enclosed in this package should be a program called "Convert".  Just click
  17.  on it's icon from the Workbench, or type "Run Convert" in the Shell.
  18.  The program opens with an explanitory message, and asks you if you want
  19.  to convert a V3 - V5.4 database to the V5.5 and subsequent format.  If you
  20.  press "Y" on the keyboard, a file requester will appear, and you can
  21.  select the database you want to convert.

  23.  The program will read in the database, and write it back to the disk in
  24.  the new format.  It is instantly available for use in bBaseII V5.5 or
  25.  later.  A normal precaution would be to copy your database to RAM:, and
  26.  then run Convert on the COPY of your database.  Once you see that the
  27.  database works fine with V5.5, you can replace the old database with the
  28.  new one without worry.

  30.  Convert will have to be re-run for each database to be converted.

  32.  I apologize for the inconvenience, but I think the benefits justify it.

  34.  Also, in V5.5, I have eliminated the "Companion Program" which was
  35.  intended to possibly run on a 512K Amiga.  In all the correspondence I
  36.  have received, people have asked for a larger database capability, but
  37.  no one has mentioned the smaller one.  I assume is was not used much.

  39.  With the switch to the new format, I believe that a database that could
  40.  run on a 512K Amiga would be too small to be of any practical use.

  42.  I expect that Version 5.6 will be the last release of bBaseII.  I will
  43.  still attempt to correct any bugs which are reported, but the program will
  44.  not be improved any further.  If you like the style of bBaseII, but are
  45.  looking for much more power, you should take a look at bBaseIII, available
  46.  in the Fred Fish collection, and other sources.  It is even easier to use
  47.  than this program, with many improvements.
